Voting Information
Absentee requests by mail will begin now and run through June 15th. All
absentee ballots must be returned or postmarked no later than 5:00 p.m.
on June 21st. One-stop voting will begin on June 3rd and continue through
June 18th and Saturday June 19th from 9am to 1pm. Swain County will have
two one-stop voting sites. One will be at the Elections office located
at 1422 Hwy. 19 South Bryson City, NC 28713 and the other will be located
at the Cherokee Life Center located at 37 Cherokee Boys Club Loop Cherokee,
NC 28719. The election will be held June 22, 2010 with polls opening at
6:30 a.m. and closing at 7:30 p.m.
GENERAL ELECTION INFORMATION
The General Election will be held on November 2nd, 2010 with polls opening
at 6:30 am and closing at 7:30 pm. One-stop voting will be from October
14th through October 29th 8-5 daily and on October 30th from 9-1. One-stop
voting sites will be at the Board of Elections office located at 1422
Highway 19 South and the Ginger Welch Life Center located at Boys Club
Loop Road in Cherokee. Absentee ballots will be ready on September 3rd
with the last day to request an absentee ballot being October 26th. All
absentee ballots must be returned to the Board of Elections office in
person or by mail must be postmarked by 5:00 pm on November 1st. Voter
registration deadline for the general election is October 8th by 5:00
pm, although someone that is not registered may come in during one-stop
and register and vote at the same time. They must provide proof of ID
with their current physical swain county address on it. NO PO BOXES!
While we manage the election process in Swain County,
all rules and procedures are set by the state. This department verifies
and certifies information for candidates filing for elected office; purges
inactive records; and maintains all voting machines and voting records.
How do you get registered to vote? You may come into
the office and get a form, call and request a form be mailed to you, or
download one from the North
Carolina Board of Elections website.

How to Register and Vote During
One-Stop Absentee
If a North Carolina resident has missed the 25 day deadline for
voter registration, he/she may register and vote during One-Stop
Absentee Voting.
To vote during One-Stop Absentee Voting, a resident must fill out
a voter registration application and prove residency by providing
appropriate identification with current name and current address.
The new registrant may vote ONLY at a One-Stop Absentee Voting Site
in the county of registration during One-Stop Absentee Voting and
not on Election Day.
Acceptable forms of identification include:
• A North Carolina driver’s license with
current address
• A utility bill with name and current
address
• A telephone or mobile phone bill
• An electric or gas bill
• A cable television bill
• A water or sewage bill

• A document with name and current address
from a local, state, or U.S. government agency:
• A passport
• A government-issued photo ID
• U.S. military ID
• A license to hunt, fish, own a gun, etc.
• A property tax bill
• Automotive registration
• Certified documentation of naturalization
• A public housing or Social Service Agency
document
• A check, invoice, or letter from a government
agency
• A birth certificate
• A student photo ID along with a document
from the school showing the student’s name and current address
• A paycheck or paycheck stub from an
employer or a W-2 statement
• A bank statement or bank-issued credit
card statement
Proof of residence does not include any piece of mail addressed
to the voter.
If you cannot supply acceptable Proof-of-Residence, your registration
form cannot be processed until the required information is provided. |
