Road Biking Rides

Below are some bike rides recommended by knowledgeable local riders.

1. Road to Nowhere (Intermediate) Starting in downtown Bryson City, this ride is eighteen miles out and back with a notable lack of flat terrain. Known for its beautiful scenery and very light traffic, it is a local favorite. Twelve miles of riding is within the National Park. This road boasts 3400' of climbing and offers long, rewarding descents.

2. Whittier Loop (Beginner) One of the easier road rides in the area, the Whittier loop meanders through rolling farmland. Although there is a short stint on Highway 441, most of the ride is on scenic two lane roads. Starting at the Post Office in Whittier, you have the opportunity to make this ride shorter or longer depending on the turnoffs you choose.

3. Burningtown Valley Loop (Beginner) A relatively flat ride located between Bryson City and Franklin, this loop runs along the Little Tennnessee River and Burningtown Creek. The valley is situated between high mountains on both sides and provides a serene pastoral setting.

4. Yellow Creek (Intermediate - Advanced) The steepest paved road in North Carolina awaits you at mile 35 into your 39 mile ride. Climb and descend through National Forest Land, pass next to Fontana Dam and follow along the Cheoah River. Simply spectacular scenery.

5. Waterrock Knob – Blue Ridge Parkway (Intermediate – Advanced) Riding this famous roadway will give you chills even in the middle of summer. The ride up to Waterrock Knob will top out at 5400' and is an amazing accomplishment. The six tunnels on the BRP require a headlight and taillight, and you should be prepared for traffic. The roadway is smooth and the views are breathtaking.
