Recreation Dept. – Front Desk Part Time 

Tax OfficeTax Collector -responsible for ensuring individuals and businesses comply with tax laws and pay the appropriate amount of taxes owed to local government agencies. They work to collect overdue tax payments and resolve any related issues.   (Hire in pay $39,370.00 yrly)

I.T./Data Processing Dept. – Technology Projects Specialist

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM (40 hours/week)

Position Summary

This full-time position supports the Swain County Data Processing Department by executing a wide range of departmental technology projects across all county operations. In addition to project work, the role includes responding to complex technical issues escalated from other staff. Responsibilities are dynamic and evolve based on departmental needs, requiring flexibility, initiative, and technical depth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out assigned departmental technology projects, managing responsibilities such as discovery, research, planning, procurement, implementation, documentation, and closeout, as delegated. Coordinate with other departments, vendors, and contractors as needed throughout the process.
  • Perform a broad range of tasks requiring both technical and physical skills related to physical plant infrastructure, network infrastructure, and computer or computer-based systems infrastructure. As a partial list, such activities include environmental preparation work (e.g., mounting, drilling), physical cabling, systems installation, computer systems configuration, and more theoretical work such as participation in infrastructure planning or redesign.
  • Maintain consistent and accurate documentation for systems, assets, and project-related activities, using departmental standards and tools.
  • Support operational maintenance of county systems, including backups, patching, performance monitoring, and general system upkeep.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts by identifying opportunities to streamline, modernize, or enhance existing county technology systems.
  • Develop and maintain operational proficiency in all systems routinely supported by the department.
  • Resolve complex technical issues escalated from other Data Processing staff.

Traits and Qualifications

  • Valid driver’s license and dependable transportation
  • Must pass background, drug screen and fingerprint checks as required by law enforcement and public safety systems
  • Physically capable of lifting up to 50 pounds, working in tight spaces, on ladders or rooftops, and in outdoor conditions

  • Able to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical staff

Environmental Health Dept. – Environmental Health Specialist

Minimum Training and Experience

Must be a registered Environmental Health Specialist or have approval for registration as an Environmental Health Specialist by the North Carolina Board of Environmental Health Specialist Examiners prior to employment; or graduation from a four-year college or university with 30 semester hours of coursework in the physical or biological sciences and two years of exposure in environmental health; or a four-year or Master’s degree in environmental health from a program which is accredited by the National Accreditation Council for Environmental Health Curricula of the National Environmental Health Association and one year of experience in environmental health. 

Job Function Overview

This is a professional environmental health position dedicated to the promotion of public health through education, surveillance, consultation, inspection, and enforcement of state, local and federal environmental health laws, and regulations.  Specific duties may include evaluation, inspection and permitting of on-site (septic) wastewater systems and drinking water wells, and, conduction of sanitation inspections of food, lodging, child day care, tattoo, public swimming pool, and institutional facilities.  Duties may also include investigation of environmental health complaints that may require enforcement action and evaluation of environmental lead exposure in housing of children with elevated blood lead levels.  Employees will have office duties involving telephone or written correspondence with the public, completion of reports and permits, and attendance at various local or state meetings and workshops.

Department of Social Services has an opening for an Income Maintenance Caseworkers – for Food Stamps and Medicaid: The primary responsibility of this position is to determine/re-determine eligibility for Medicaid as an Income Maintenance worker. Employees must explain Medicaid programs and benefits options and refer clients to other programs and services that could meet there needs as appropriate. Swain County Health Department has a position available for a WIC Director/Nutritionist.  This position will manage and operate the Nutritional Program for Women, Children and Infants (WIC). Provides fundamental nutrition counseling and education and has knowledge of human behavior. Graduation from a Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education- approved Didactic Program in Dietetics; or Dietetic Technician, Registered with the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education with a Bachelor’s degree in any subject area from an accredited four-year college or university; or a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition or Community Nutrition from an accredited four-year college or university.” requires PD 107 job application

Swain County has an opening for a Paramedic with EMS. Full time position with benefits. Must possess a North Carolina Paramedic Certificate.  Under general supervision, performs emergency response work involving providing emergency medical care to victims of trauma, medical, and other emergencies in an unsupervised, pre-hospital environment. Work also involves responding to emergency medical calls, performing extrication and life rescue, and providing advanced life support to sick/injured persons. Work also involves preparing patient charts, completing records, and providing education to the public.

Work involves receiving all incoming calls on emergency 911 lines and dispatching applicable personnel. This will involve dispatching units or representatives from fire departments, rescue squads, police departments, the Sheriff’s Department, Highway Patrol, wildlife services, animal control, etc. Must be able to work different shifts. Must be 18 years of age or older. This position will be full time with benefits, starting at $33,207.00 yearly for Dispatcher and EMD starts at $34,278.00 yearly with an increase in six months and chance for advancement. 

Swain County Sheriff’s Department has openings for Full Time Deputies.  Looking for candidates who want a career in law enforcement, attend BLET and become certified deputies.  The Sheriff’s Office will pay while attending BLET and will include training materials, meals and mileage.  Come by the Sheriff’s Office at 95 Brendle St and pick up an application, Monday – Friday 8 am till 5 pm, except for holidays.  The Sheriff would like to talk to you and explain the pay package for attending BLET.  Hurry the next class’ start soon.
